Who’s Who

MINISTER – Rev’d Richard Matcham

Hello, my name is Richard Matcham and I have been the Pastor at Barton in Torquay for over 8 years since completing a Masters in Theology from Bristol Baptist College.  I am married to Rachael, we have three grown-up children, one granddaughter, and a recently adopted two year-old daughter, oh, and a dog who redefines the word “dopey”!  I have ten years retail management experience followed by a call into mission with YWAM (Youth With A Mission), which included living and serving in Egypt.  Occasionally, I also teach theology and biblical studies to willing undergraduate students and missionaries, as well as take the BBC Radio Devon Sunday Services a few times a year.  If you’re looking to grow in your Christian faith and use your God-given gifts in a local community, then Barton might just be the place for you.

Bill Knowles

I have worshipped at Barton for a number of years and served on the Diaconate several times.  I take part in the music team, lead a Sunday School group and most importantly, I am married to Kris and father to two awesome boys.  When I send in an actual photo of myself, they promise to take down this cartoon version!

Carol Hellyer

I have been at Barton many years and am currently serving on the Diaconate for the first time.  I have a heart for Mission and pastoral care.  This has taken me to Kosovo with BMS for a short period, and also to Cambodia with a team from Barton Baptist Church in 2015.  I also serve in the Sunday School and I am recently retired and considering my options.

Steve Philips

I am married to Gosia and father to Nicola.  We have been at Barton for a few years and and am brand new to this whole “Diaconate thing” despite God calling me quite clearly.  I have a huge heart to reach out to men with the Gospel and have been active with Christian Vision for Men (CVM) over the years.  Currently, I facilitate the Social Media and promotion of Christian Ministries, including Open Doors, for Barton.  I long for the Gospel to reach all people, especially men during these challenging times in which we live.

Dr Julie Cubbit

I am a GP and part-time student of Theology.  I am serving on my first-term within the Diaconate at Barton, and help lead the Sunday Services and and occasionally preach, both at Barton and elsewhere.  I love to explore the rich spirituality of the whole Christian tradition and seek to bring this into my life and ministry for the Church.  Again, as per Bill, when I send in a photo Richard promises to take down this cartoon version.
