Meet the Team:

Derek Whitton

I am married to Ann and we have both attended Barton Baptist Church since the end of 2002 when we moved to Torquay from Cornwall. I was baptised at Barton on Easter Sunday 2004 and have been a member of the diaconate team since April 2006.

Although born and bred in the Bay ( Ann hails from the South-West too), we spent much of our working lives as teachers in and around London and Buckinghamshire before retiring after a spell working in Plymouth in December 2002. My career was teaching children with moderate learning and behavioural difficulties and I was Headteacher of secondary special schools in Ealing, west London, and Plymouth for 20 years. Our daughter and her husband and children also live in Torquay and are a great delight and blessing.

My interests include music (classical), reading (novels) and caravanning. Ann and I work part-time as site wardens for The Caravan Club which we enjoy immensely.

At present my responsibilities include oversight of the buildings and premises of the Church, the sound system and I am the designated trustee under the Safeguarding procedures designed to protect our children and vulnerable adults.

I feel so privileged to be a chosen child of our majestic and merciful God and to be part of His people who gather to honour Him at Barton Baptist Church. As well as the opportunity to praise Him and serve Him I consider the participation in House Group where we study, pray and generally have fun together to be a particular blessing.

Maureen Sims

I am married with two children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  I grew up in the Plymouth Brethren, but joined Barton Baptist Church in my early teens when I was baptised.  I became a Sunday school teacher when I was sixteen.  I have served as a deacon under three ministers.  I also work along side my husband in the Gideons where over the last twenty years we have had the privilege of placing New Testaments into the hands of hundreds of Year 7 school children.  We are also both on the chaplaincy Team at Torbay hospital.  I feel privileged to serve the Lord in these areas.

Dave Brooks

I am married with two grown up children.  I have been at Barton since a young boy, and gave my heart to the Lord at a Boys Brigade camp aged eleven.  I got baptised with my family in 1976.  This is my first time as a deacon serving the church and I have a heart for evangelism and pastoral care.  In January 2010 I went to Kosovo with a team from the church delivering shoe boxes with Samaritans Purse.  It was a wonderful time and experience.

In my spare time I paint pictures, especially animals.  I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and walking the dog!

Janet Siddall

I am a retired primary school teacher, married to Richard, with two sons and two grandsons.  I have been a Christian from my early teens, brought up in the Plymouth Brethren and baptised at 16.  We moved to Devon from Sheffield thirty years ago and we have worshipped at Barton since then.  This is my first term as a deacon.

Margaret Templeman (Church Secretary)

Essex is the County where I lived and worked but I am not an Essex girl as born a Cockney and now live in  Torquay.

Whist a teenager I committed my life to Christ as I wanted to receive His forgiveness and love. Since then have attempted to follow and serve Him which has been a joy. These have been exciting years living as a Christian  but there has been  a spell of depression, illness and other difficulties.

For 12 years I organised the training for a number of Pre-school teachers in the  rural areas of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This has led to some being employed in Government schools where they were paid.  Our team  raised money to build 7 Pre-schools and to assist the funding of orphans in Christian Children's Villages.

My interests are reading, travel and creative crafts and using my home to welcome people.

I count it a privilege to be a member of the Leadership team at Barton Baptist.
